elite runners.

dad decided about 6 months ago it would be fun to run a little race together. nothing too hard core. meant as a bonding time, not a competition. (translation - i know i won't beat anyone, so let's say it doesn't matter who wins.) he consulted a family friend and experienced marathoner (43 fulls, over 200 halfs, and hundreds of 10 k and 5k races), who recommended the st.george marathon. although they do not offer a half marathon, kent, the experienced runner, assured us there are a ton of people that start half way through - no big deal. he signed mom, dad, katie, me and stevie up for the 13.1 mile run.

the plan was to leave by 5:30 am, before the road closed, and park at the half way point. we would join the runners about two hours into the race. (translation - we would wait about two and a half hours in a car before we braved highway 18)

on the morning of october the 4th we awoke to rain. lots and lost of it. (translation - i was hoping they would cancel the race.) but no, we would not stray from our plan. when we arrived at the half way point, we found ourselves all alone. it turns out we were the only people that knew about the unofficial half marathon. (translation- kent is a liar.) sitting in the car waiting for runners to pass, the lights suddenly turned off (translation - the battery died and we still had an hour before our pace runners would come by.)

kent, the dishonest runner, started giving us advice -"ok, so some people have died by pushing themselves too much, so don't do that;" "oh, and your nipples may bleed. and your toenails, they will probably fall off." my dad's face turned white and katie almost started crying. "i'm not doing this. i didn't want to do this. i don't even park far from the grocery store so i don't have to walk. i hate you for this dad."

when the lead runner passed, i was tempted to jump out of the car and run along side him - for .1 miles, until he smoked me. dad wouldn't let me. (translation - he was mad i thought of it first. ) with the car freezing, and the fibber starting to make lame/creepy jokes about how it's been years since he was in a car with hot young ladies and steamy windows, we decided it was time to join the pack. however, it had only been an hour and fifteen minutes into the race. (translation - we were running with the elite runners.) we stripped off our layers and pretended to walk along side the road. slowly we merged into the group. we didn't belong, but boy did we feel cool. someone at the first water station said, "wow, look at her, she doesn't even look tired." i felt like a fraud. the whole time i was waiting for someone to pull me off the course and arrest me for cheating. but, i also felt cool and fast.

we all finished. alive and with our toenails still in tact. katie threw up about every mile. i almost lost both legs because i thought i would be discovered if i slowed down. dad's feet were bleeding. and mom was waddling like a duck by the end. BUT these types of injuries are common for the front runners of a full marathon. a few of us qualified for boston. big whoop. (translation - if we actually ran boston, we would finish dead last and everyone would know we are cheaters.)

these were not the elite runners. slow pokes.

these were.

the course.

non-elite.

elite.

after the race we rewarded ourselves with a trip to vegas to see phantom. (translation - elite runners don't need to rest after a race.)

look for us on the cover of next months runner's world.
